About Northeastern Basketball Central
What is this website?
Welcome to Northeastern Basketball Central! The main goal of this website is to celebrate all things Northeastern University hoops. Beyond that, I created this website for a number of different purposes, and I hope you find it useful and enjoyable to browse:
- To provide a resource for learning about the Northeastern Huskies basketball teams. When I was first interested in becoming a Huskies fan, I found it difficult to learn the basics about the team with the resources available online. Who on the team are the most important players? Which ones are fan-favorites? How well has the team been doing recently, and how well and they expected to do this season? What are the critical moments, years, and players in their history? I hope that this site can help any aspiring NU fanatics learn a bit more than the simple roster and records pages available on the NU athletics website. More info on exactly how to get started as an aspiring NU hoops fan can be found here!
- To have a place to archive Northeastern history. Aside from being an NU hoops fan, I’m also a Northeastern sports historian and I like to research old NU players, coaches, teams, luminaries who crossed path with NU, arenas and facilities, cool NU memorabilia etc. To this end, I’ve spent time digging through the depths of Google search, Youtube, sports-reference, the Snell library physical archives, old newspapers, eBay, and much more, for long-forgotten chunks of Huskies history (Want an example? How about the time Babe Ruth skated at Northeastern’s hockey rink). My goal is to use this site to help bring those stories, artifacts, memorabilia, and media out of my Chrome bookmarks, desk drawers, and cell phone camera roll and into a place where they’re easily accessible to all.
- To bring back the vibe of old-school college sports fan sites, with a modern revamp. Back in the day before social media sites like Twitter, Reddit, and Discord replaced making your own website and forums, there used to be some really fun, creative, and expressive fan sites out there by people who just wanted to show their fandom for schools and share it with others. For Northeastern sports, there were sites like Diehard Dogs (here it is circa 2008– it was also a magazine!), the Perillo Brothers fan site (circa 1999!), and more (like this and this). Of course, maintaining a site is hard work and it’s understandable that social media has displaced it, but I think anyone that was around for the internet before, say, 2012 can agree there was a certain magic to it that isn’t around anymore. I wanted to bring back that aura just a little, with a more palatable look for the modern “HD” internet. Also, shoutout to The Northeastern Hockey Blog, who maintain a news website for Northeastern Hockey today- hopefully I can provide something similar for basketball, albeit with a different medium of news coverage.
What about the podcast?
One thing that is not covered on this site in text form is minute-to-minute Northeastern basketball news (except for recruiting), such as postgame stories and upcoming event previews. I’ll leave that to the folks who are on-campus covering the team and talking to the coaches on a game-by-game basis. I’m biased as a former member, but I highly recommend WRBB Sports for this sort of reporting.
That said, I’m still giving updates on the Northeastern basketball teams, season previews, and game analysis, just in podcast form! Tune into the Northeastern Basketball Central podcast for the latest Huskies hoops news and my thoughts on it. Look forward to knowledgable guests from NU media and fandom, plus hopefully players as well! The podcast is released weekly during the season and on an as-needed basis in the offseason. You can find it here on this website, or on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Justin Diament, a Northeastern graduate (from the Khoury College of Computer Sciences in 2024 specifically) and die-hard Huskies hoops fan. During my time at NU, I was Sports Director for WRBB 104.9 FM, the campus radio station, and the primary journalistic outlet covering NU hoops games. At Your Home for Huskies Sports, I called, wrote, and covered dozens of NU men’s and women’s basketball games, including road and tournament games. Now that I’ve graduated, I may not be in the press box and interviewing the coaches every game anymore, but I still love Northeastern basketball, as well as NU sports history, and want to share that love with others.
I’ve tried to impart my knowledge and love for Huskies sports through a number of different outlets, namely:
- Northeastern Basketball Central: This website and the corresponding podcast! More info in the sections above.
- Aurardle: A Wordle-inspired NU player guessing game (featuring currently-active basketball, hockey, and baseball players). If you enjoy daily word games, give it a shot.
- Northeastern Sports Rabbit Hole: A Twitter account where I post about the history of NU sports, NU sports venues, difficult-to-find archived NU sports media, and cool NU memorabilia. I’m also working on adding these items to the Huskies History and Memorabilia Gallery pages on this website so they’re easier to read through and better preserved compared to a crumbling social media platform with a character limit on posts.
Are you (or this website) affiliated with the Northeastern Basketball program?
No. I have previously been a radio broadcaster for Northeastern Basketball, but for a station that is independent of Northeastern Athletics. I am not and have never been officially affiliated with the program. As such, all information presented on this site is either facts based on publicly available information or my own opinions. Nothing on this website is confirmed or endorsed by Northeastern Athletics.
Also, while I will be happy to answer your questions to the best of my ability, if you are a college basketball fan, recruit, or media member, I CANNOT help get you in contact with anyone involved with the official Northeastern Athletics program, including players, coaches, and sports information staff.
Why should I become a Northeasten Basketball fan?
Boy do I have the page for you!
